Shawnee Baker
Author and Public Speaker
As the Director and Co-Founder, Shawnee provides public speaking engagements on Baylie’s story. Shawnee has done speaking engagements with students, parents, coaches, staff, large corporations, community programs, and medical teams. She has recently been asked to speak at a local hospital on medical proxies, and with Dr. Sheflai’s Alumni for college safety. Shawnee will be one of the guest speakers at the upcoming Ad Council convention in October on Mental Health, protecting our young people.
Shawnee focuses her talks on the hidden dangers young people face in today’s changing world, as well as the need for legal forms after the age of eighteen. Shawnee shares her experience with the laws that failed them and the safety nets that were not in place for Baylie. Shawness explains what happened to their family as a result of not having things in place, and how Baylie’s tragedy could have been prevented with education for students, the right protocols from the college, and better safety tools in place.
Shawnee is heading a National Campaign on the hidden dangers of college life. This includes sexual assault, sex trafficking, roofies, domestic violence, social media dangers, online sextortion, scams, bullying, suicide risks, drugs, and alcohol. Through partnership with the https://gabbypetitofoundation.org along with numerous nonprofits and support from the Clery Centre and Stop Hazing Organization, we hope to provide families with all the tools they need to stay safe. There is so much for parents and students to know. By combining all of these issues into one educational campaign, we can save lives.
Through real-life stories, the message is heard loud and clear, followed by proven tactics and strategies taught by leading experts. Providing education and awareness, along with actionable solutions, tools, and safety nets, we can prevent these tragedies from happening in the future.
We feel that students also need a better understanding of the laws that protect them, what they cover, and the policies and protocols that are defined by their college. Both students and parents are often unprepared for the situations that arise during the college years. Parents need to know the specific details and understand the pathway if problems arise. Parents must also provide a bridge for their grown children while they are at school. Colleges are not designed to parent young adults, and students still need parenting until they are 25 years old.
These are often topics no one talks about when launching young adults from the nest. Historically, we let them fly at age eighteen and hoped for the best. Those days are over.
